Through intimate vérité, archival footage, and visually innovative treatments of her poetry, Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project pushes the boundaries of biographical documentary film by traveling through time and space to reveal the enduring influence of one of America’s greatest living artists and social commentator.
Joe Brewster – Director and Producer: Joe Brewster is a Harvard-trained physician and an award-winning immersive and documentary filmmaker whose character-driven work challenges the audience to envision an equitable future. He is a Spirit Award and four-time Emmy nominee. Brewster, a two-time Sundance jury prize winner, resides in Brooklyn with his partner, Michele Stephenson (and cat, Tama).
Michaëlle Martial – Poet: Michaëlle Martial, best known as The Caribbean Nightingale is a Haitian bred Pan-African Poetess, multilingual Entrepreneur, Woman Advocate, trauma survivor. She is passionate about poetry and cooking, which are two of her favorite forms of artistic expression. In the summer of 2023, she opened the doors of POETRY ON MAIN in downtown Salt Lake City. It is a Poetry Lounge that hosts cultural events highlighting Spoken Word Poetry and Afro-Caribbean Cuisine. POETRY ON MAIN is also home to the author’s Afro-Caribbean Gift Shop promoting books by Black authors as well as made-to-order handmade goods and tailor-made clothing by women artisans of African descent.
